Our Heritage

Maritime heritage in a modern setting.

The O.H. “Doc” Freeman Building stands on a waterfront property owned by the Freeman family since 1938. Built in 1947 as a marine supply store and family residence, it is now home to architects, aerospace engineers, designers, software developers, lawyers, and financial advisors working side by side on Lake Union.

The story began before the building itself. In 1928, O.H. “Doc” Freeman bought the Fremont Boat Market from Captain V.C. Webster, who had established the business to serve the growing boat traffic on Lake Union. Ten years later, Doc purchased the waterfront property at 999 N Northlake Way, then used for log storage. He moved his family onto the site aboard a retired ferry called the Airline, which served as both home and place of business. When the Coast Guard took over the ferry during World War II, the Freemans moved into a converted fish-buying barge. In 1947, Doc finally built on dry land: a two-story building with his marine hardware store downstairs and the family residence above.

Doc Freeman’s became a familiar name to generations of Northwest boaters, known for its remarkable stock of marine supplies and the advice that came with them. Although Doc sold the store to two employees in 1952, the family retained the property and continued its work on the waterfront through Fremont Boat Co. and the tugboat business. In 1999, Doc’s son Mark and his wife Margie converted the former marine hardware building into the offices that occupy it today. The chandlery counters are gone, but the building has never stopped being a place of work. Its latest chapter is written by a different mix of businesses, while the marina outside remains part of the waterfront that first brought the Freemans here.
